Click here to view the Mission Statement of The Guild. The Guild Meetings Please note that we will change the focus for our 11/20 Guild meeting. Our previously scheduled presenter for November needs to change, so we will take advantage of this situation to spend the time at our November meeting to have a general group discussion of how to deal with issues and concerns emerging from the passage of Proposition 8 in California. Given the huge role of the LDS Church in this issue and the emerging community protests against the Church's involvement, this seems an important time for Guild members to address our own feelings and the possible ways we can respond constructively. It seems relevant for us to discuss our multiple perspectives about the psychological and political impact of the Proposition 8 vote on our clients as well as ourselves. This is a unique moment in history and we have a unique opportunity to deal with this issue because of our presence in Salt Lake City, home of the LDS Church. Come join the discussion. Thursday, November 20th: 8:00 - 9:30 a.m. New articles posted on dealing with anti-LGBT marriage legislature. We normally meet the 3rd Thursday of each month from 8:00 am to 9:30 am from September to May; no meetings are held from June to August. Each monthly gathering consists of 30 minutes of networking and business planning, followed by an hour of educational training about LGBTQ, mental-health topics. These trainings are provided by Guild members or specialists within the community. Note that our December meeting will be the 1st instead of the 3rd Thursday, due to the holiday season; and our January meeting will be a joint session with Association for Women in Psychology & Women in Private Practice on the evening of the 3rd Friday that month at the Women's Resource Center on the University of Utah's campus. Unless otherwise noted, all meetings are held at the Utah Pride Center (361 North 300 West) in the South Building. Click here for the list of 2008-09 topics and presenters. Pride Day Each year we organize a contingent of our members to march in the Pride Day Parade as well as host a booth at the Pride Festival. We plan our Pride activities during our February through May meetings, specifically about our Parade theme, booth activities, and outreach. If you have any new ideas, let us know!

Affirmative therapy for LGBTQ individuals is based on the premise that LGBTQ and heterosexual identities are equally valid. An LGBTQ affirmative counselor has particular knowledge, awareness (specifically self-awareness), and skills specific to competent counseling for LGBTQ individuals. While maintaining a broad view of acceptable lifestyles, LGBTQ-affirmative therapy challenges oppressive stereotypes and systems of thought, and celebrates and advocates for LGBTQ people and their relationships.* The American Psychological Association has published the Guidelines for Psychotherapy with Lesbian, Gay, & Bisexual Clients. You can find a copy of the guidelines here. Click here for the “What a Competent Counselor Will Do” guidelines created by the Association for Gay, Lesbian, & Bisexual Issues in Counseling.
